This Week’s Album

Michael Angelakos’ Passion Pit released their first studio album, Manners, in 2009, following their debut 2008 EP, Chunk of Change. Manners featured 11 songs; number nine being a revamped version of Sleepyhead, the Chunk of Change favorite. The Spotify version of Manners contains an additional three songs: “stripped down” versions of Sleepyhead and Moth’s Wings, and a cover of The Cranberries’ Dreams.

The strong electronic and rock feel, with pop themes, gives us an album that works for everyone. While they all feature just about the same set of sounds, the songs manage to be incredibly unique from each other, but never stray too far as to be out of place. The stripped down versions are wonderful additions that play the album out in a cozy and homely way.

Song of the Day

4/9 – “You Only Live Once” is one of the Strokes’ most popular songs, released in their 2006 album First Impressions Of Earth. But today’s song isn’t the “You Only Live Once” you might know. A demo version of the song was included in The Singles Volume 1, released in 2023, title “I’ll Try Anything Once”.

This early version of the famous song is just as good, if not better. With Julian Casablanca singing a much more relaxed and quiet set of lyrics. If you are a fan of the Strokes’ classic lineup and haven’t heard this yet, it’s definitely worth playing several times.

“Oh, everybody plays the game

And if you don’t, you’re called insane”

French House and Electronic pioneers Thomas Bangalter and “Guy-Manuel” make up the robotic duo Daft Punk. Their four studio form a discography of pure gold (and silver). From parties, to chill days, to sad nights, Daft Punk has something for every vibe.

The silver of Daft Punk’s discography would be their 3rd studio album: Human After All. While the songs aren’t bad, they are quite limited. Repetition hits its peak in this album. Despite that, the songs can definitely still have a special place in your library. Discovery and Random Access Memories, however, easily put Daft Punk in the music Hall of Fame.

Japanese Jazz fusion group Casiopea released their self-titled first album in 1979. All tracks but one are entirely instrumental. A great one for when you’re staring at the stars.

The album’s consistency and variety stay strong the entire way through. Listening all the way through is a great experience, yet each track shines on its own. The penultimate track features vocals and is a wonderful climax; leading into the 8th track, which gives a wonderful, energetic send-off to the album. Easily an A+ album.
